Open Air Radio (Leicester) was originally created for the former pupils and staff of Leicester’s Western Park Open Air School a special needs school located in the United Kingdom. The school first opened in 1930 and was closed in 2005 due to local authority funding cuts. Now the site lays disused and boarded up its only visitors being local vandals and the local residents who assist Mr Glynn Finney a proud former pupil and now Official Historian for the school site and its amazing chapter in Medical History. Glynn funds Open Air Radio from his own pocket for the entertainment of his friends who also once attended this amazing school & the local community that support his endless efforts to save this Grade II Listed building from being lost forever. Glynn is a sufferer of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) sometimes associated with smoking and industry Glynn was born with the disease, born in 1974 Glynn went to the Open Air School at the age of 5 & left to pursue a IT qualification in 1992. Glynn runs all his projects under the allies of Finney Family Hosting a service he setup with his parents in 2006 to help the local community. Open Air Radio (Leicester) is a project which Glynn hopes he will get sponsorship for some day so that it can be made available to the wider community unfortunately for now though things are still in their early stages. Glynn is currently trying to raise funds for a permanent memorial to be purchased and erected hopefully within the Public Park where his former school takes its name, or within one of Leicester’s cemeteries. Over this school’s 75-year history it is estimated that nearly 50,000 pupils with complex medical conditions and disabilities attended the school to be educated and receive specialist medical support from a team of onsite medical staff, Glynn maintains and manages a Facebook page & group as well as a comprehensive website documenting the history of the now only still standing Open Air School in the United Kingdom.
